Take Our Quiz!

Cosmetology school is an exciting alternative to other academic schools because it is a hands-on learning environment. This is great for students who learn by doing. Before enrolling in a cosmetology program, there are some things you should know so you can make the most of your experience.

Becoming a licensed cosmetologist also requires you to pass the state licensing exam. We understand that testing can be difficult for some students. If you struggle with tests or have test anxiety, we offer extra help to prepare you to sit for the exam.

At Elite Academy, we know new goals can be both exciting and challenging! You may find unique challenges when you begin cosmetology school, but don’t worry! We are here to help. That is why we have created this guide to show you some of the challenges you may face and ways that beauty schools can help you be successful.

Classroom Learning

Like many other classes, our cosmetology program begins in a classroom with a teacher and textbooks. This will help you build a basic foundation of understanding before you start practicing services for yourself. Every school teaches classes differently, but most of them are aware that cosmetology school is full of all types of learners. That’s why we strive to incorporate different teaching styles to help every student understand what they’re learning!

Hands-On Learning

In many ways, cosmetology school is like your high school chemistry or biology labs. When you first start the program, you spend more time in a classroom learning the basics of safety, sanitation procedures, and techniques. Once you’ve learned your basic foundation, you then start doing more hands-on learning*.

This is when you can actually practice your skills using the different products and tools you learned about. It’s very similar to high school science labs because you learn about a subject and then get to practice the principle for yourself!

Learning on the Service Floor

At Elite Academy, we want our programs to provide practical knowledge, which means you’ll spend a lot of time on the salon floor!* Cosmetology is best learned through practice. That’s why our students are on the service floor for most of their education.

Not only can you solidify the knowledge you got in the classroom, but you can also build your confidence working in a salon or spa environment while you’re in school. This experience can also help you pick up different soft skills such as customer service, finances, and much more!

The clients you work with as a student stylist can also persist with you after graduation. Take this as an opportunity to build a network of your own before you even graduate. This can help you to know what services your clients prefer and how to best serve them, giving you a head start as a professional cosmetologist!

Career Opportunities

Going to cosmetology school and getting your license can open many doors. Working at a salon can be wonderful, but don’t feel like you are limited to just that. After becoming a licensed cosmetologist, you can have an exciting career in so many fields!

Here are a few career opportunities you could enjoy:

  • Hairstylist
  • Platform artist
  • Product representative
  • Image consultant
  • And so much more!

Going to cosmetology school is an investment. If you are worried about paying for cosmetology school, Elite Academy offers a variety of financial aid* options. Test Preparation

Yes, we know tests can be stressful for many people, so that’s why we focus on test preparation from the very beginning! The licensing exams for programs like cosmetology, esthetics, or nail technician vary state by state. Most schools strive to prepare their students early on. Once students have completed their program hours and graduated from beauty school, they’re eligible to take the licensing exam.

In Oklahoma state, your exam can include both written and practical elements. This is helpful for people who get test anxiety over traditional testing because it isn’t just a written test. We offer tutoring, review sessions, and more to help our students succeed, so be sure to ask how we can support you!
