Take Our Quiz!

Beauty blogging for a living. It might sound too good to be true, but if you’ve ever found yourself clicking through a YouTube video chain, or scrolling through tags on Instagram, you know beauty blogging is still a popular (and achievable) job!

If you are a beauty or fashion aficionado yourself, finding your home online isn’t something you have to just dream about. Make it happen with our guide to succeeding as a beauty blogger in Oklahoma! We’ve researched some local Oklahoma beauty influencers and hope to share some of their tips for success.

1. Find Your Niche

Before you begin, it’s important to identify your niche. Who are you writing for? What do they want to see? What’s the secret ingredient you’re providing? As you look into what you can provide, be sure to play up your strengths and do what you love.

Are you a nail artist? A playful makeup experimentalist? An aspiring hairstylist? The most used and searched beauty topics on Instagram tend to be:

  • Makeup
  • Skincare
  • Fashion
  • Style
  • And hair styles

Use your skills to curate a space and content that get your visitors excited about the same topics you are! @sarahndippitty from Oklahoma City does a great job of showing off her travels at the same time as her fashion. If you know what you love, it will come across on your platforms.

2. Get The Equipment

As you begin documenting your fashion sense, hair tutorials, or beauty reviews, you’ll need to get some kind of camera. A phone will do, but a high-quality camera never hurts. Be sure photos and videos are well-lit and easy to see.

Think about what you look for when shopping for makeup, accessories, or clothing. You want to touch the details, see the textures, and pin-point certain colors. Use natural lighting when possible and editing software like Photoshop or Canva to make the best parts stand out.

3. Get The Best Shot

Something to consider is having a friend, or photographer partner to help you out @amandasok pictures are so cute and we love that most of them are taken by her husband! She may not be an Oklahoman by birth, but this Texan native shows off Oklahoma to its best advantage in her pictures and her love for OK shows!

Have someone on hand to help out with mini-photo shoots, or who you know has a great eye for styling a subject in a photo.

Use local landmarks and in your own posts and make yourself an identifiable part of Oklahoma and its culture! We think @courtneybuechle has a knack for choosing great backgrounds that show off each season Oklahoma has to perfection.

Whether it’s winter or summer, Courtney is able to showcase her outfits as well as local charm. Choose locations that mean something to you, that show off your looks, and that connect viewers with you.

4. Cultivate a Following

It’s important to cultivate your platform followings. Be personable in your posts and provide content that is easily digested and shared. Jenny Taylor @jenlyn83 has pitch perfect voice and tone in every single post. When you read her Instagram captions you know who’s speaking. Her content is always curated to her audience and we admire that she shares her vulnerable moments with women who can relate.

As you develop your platform, be conscious of your tone. Are you all about emojis? What about hashtags? Be sure to include elements that speak to you and your style.

5. Reach Out

As a blogger you are dependent on word-of-mouth, online shares, and other bloggers to help promote your blog. You can reach out to brands directly, but to start out, collaboration is key. Connect with local creators and ask to partner with them in your posts. You can see some awesome collaboration with our Oklahoma bloggers like @rowdabaker and her post with @samantha.radcliffe.

Research events that are happening where you can collaborate with local boutiques or businesses as well. Usually these kinds of partnerships are win-win and can help gain followers and promote awareness on both sides. In Tulsa, Fashion in the Square drew in a great amount of visitors this year and local influencers shared tons of pics featuring fellow bloggers and their styles!

6. Be Yourself

The most important part of beauty blogging is being able to connect genuinely with your followers. Give real reviews and offer your thoughts on beauty and fashion. You can make connections with your followers, but gaining traction can take time. Blogging takes a commitment and time to grow and move with you. Allow your style and platform to change with you.
