Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a barber and a cosmetologist—and does it matter which license I get?

It matters more than most people think. In Oklahoma, barbers and cosmetologists are licensed separately and have distinct scopes of practice. Barbers are specifically trained for men's grooming services—including straight-razor shaving, beard sculpting, and certain scalp treatments—that fall outside what a standard cosmetology license typically covers. If your goal is to work in a barbershop setting, a barbering license is the right credential to pursue from the start.
